Searching Chapters Rather Than Verses

Today’s blog centers around a question I periodically answer from users and it was emailed to me again recently. Hopefully this little trick will help you out sometime.

The most recent question went something like this:

I’m studying Ephesians and made my way to Ephesians 1:22-23 where Paul references Jesus as the head and the church as His body. From here I executed an inline search in Paul’s letters with this query: head WITHIN 10 words body. I was shocked to discover the very passage I was studying didn’t show up in the results. What’s happening here?

If you’ve ever experienced this, it can be frustrating until you remember this little insight:

  • the Bible search type locates terms in the SAME VERSE
  • the Basic search type locates terms in the SAME CHAPTER

Let’s take this out for a spin:

  • Open the ESV to Ephesians 1:22-23 (A)
  • Notice the word head is in verse 22 (B) and body is in verse 23 (C)

  • Click the Inline Search icon on the Bible’s toolbar (D)
  • Set the passages to search drop down list to Pauline Epistles (E)
  • Set the search type to Bible (F)
  • Place this query in the Find box: head WITHIN 10 words body (G)

  • Press the Enter key to generate the results
  • Notice Ephesians 1:22-23 doesn’t appear in the list because the search terms (head and body) are in different verses (H)

  • Change the search type to Basic (I)
  • Notice Ephesians 1:22-23 (J) and Ephesians 4:14-16 (K) are added to the results because the search terms (head and body) appear in the same chapter

You may not need this tip every day, but when you do need it it’s nice to have in your toolbox!
